What is Kindergarten Ready? An update...with books!

Cheryl Beaudoin

We are just weeks away from the start of school—it is such an exciting time, especially for families of rising Kindergarteners! You may wonder how you can help prepare your grands, and you also may wonder...are they ready?

For me, this school year is a special one as I have TWO grandchildren starting Kindergarten! We have been talking a lot about what to expect and their excitement about being at a new school and making new friends. They are both so ready for this journey! How do I know they are ready? Read my blog post from last year where I talk about the key skills for Kindergarten readiness and success, based on my years in the classroom.

From the archive: What Is "Kindergarten Ready"?

I am pulling together some fun items to celebrate and spark conversation about starting Kindergarten—and of course, there are books! These are some that I have used in the past and recommend:

  • A Place Called Kindergarten, by Jessica Harper
  • The King of Kindergarten, by Derrick Barnes & Vanessa Brantley-Newton
  • The Queen of Kindergarten, by Derrick Barnes & Vanessa Brantley-Newton
  • Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten, by Joseph Slate

How can you help prepare your grands for Kindergarten? Read to them, spend time with them, listen to what they have to say, and, help them practice those important self-help skills, outlined in the linked post, that are so important for a great Kindergarten year!

How will you or have you helped your grands get ready for Kindergarten? Have you been able to help them prepare with self-help skills? Have you learned anything along the way to share with the group?

Hi, I’m Cheryl: grandmother, retired Kindergarten teacher, longtime friend (and current Board member) of the Discovery Museum—and now, blogger!  As a grandparent, I try to apply what I learned as a teacher about children and their development to strengthen my relationships with my grandchildren and bring them joy. My hope for this blog is to engage with other grandparents in the Museum community to collect and share stories and ideas about the joys—and challenges—of grandparenting, and how we can connect and deepen our relationships with our grandchildren. Please join me in this wonderful journey we are on—I look forward to hearing from you! Use the comment box at the bottom of any blog post or email me at gpdiscoveries@gmail.com.
