The Discovery Museums Appoint Two New Board Members
Acton, MA – The Discovery Museums have welcomed two new members to their board of directors: Harry Hollenberg of Acton and Anthony V. Rao, Ph.D. of Chestnut Hill.
“We are thrilled to welcome Harry and Tony to our board,” said Bill Ryan, Board Chair. “Together they bring the educational, professional, and nonprofit experience to bring important perspective to our work to provide learning opportunities through play for children and families, and to expand our accessibility to enable us to serve all children.”
Harry Hollenberg is a Founding Partner of Carlisle & Company, a Concord-based management consulting firm focused on the motor vehicle industry. Working with companies ranging from BMW to Toyota to Freightliner to Caterpillar, Harry has over 20 years’ of experience providing strategic advice in the areas of supply chain performance, service parts operations, dealer relationships, operational mergers, and business and technology process improvements. In addition to leading consulting engagements, Harry is also responsible for management and execution of all of Carlisle’s survey and data analytics products, as well as all recruiting functions within Carlisle.
An Acton resident, Harry frequently brought his two teenage children to visit Bessie, the dinosaur mascot of The Discovery Museums, when they were somewhat younger. In recent years, Harry's consulting firm has conducted three pro-bono strategic projects for the Museums.
Harry holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Northwestern University, and an MBA from The Sloan School of Management at M.I.T.
Dr. Anthony Rao worked for over 20 years in the Department of Psychiatry at Children’s Hospital Boston, where he served as Instructor at Harvard Medical School. He maintains a private practice in Lexington and consults to families all over the country.
Anthony has been a featured expert in documentaries for the A&E series Investigative Reports and MTV’s True Life series. He regularly appears on news segments pertaining to childhood and has been interviewed for articles in many publications, including The NewYorker, Parent's Magazine, The Chicago Tribune, and The Washington Times.
Anthony is the author of The Way of Boys: Promoting the Social and Emotional Development of Young Boys, and is currently working on his next book project.
He holds a B.S. in Psychology and Child Studies from Tufts University, a M.A. in Clinical-Experimental Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University.
Anthony and Harry join a Board that has led the Museums through a successful 2015, a year in which almost 170,000 were served at the museums and in school classrooms throughout New England. An emphasis on reaching out to families that face financial, developmental or cultural barriers to visiting museums enabled more than 26% of total visitors—including families with children on the autism spectrum, who are deaf or hard of hearing, or have vision loss—to be served for free or deeply reduced cost. Also in 2015, the Museums broke ground on a fully accessible and inclusive treehouse and nature playscape, called Discovery Woods, expected to open in July.
