Reports to: Director of Facilities and Exhibit Maintenance
Schedule: 20 hours per week; flexible schedule
Classification: Part-time, hourly, exempt
Compensation: $18.50 hourly
Position Overview
Facilities Assistant II works closely with members of our Facilities Department to create a positive environment for all visitors by helping ensure well-maintained, clean, and safe museum buildings, grounds, and indoor and outdoor visitor spaces within the Discovery Museum’s 4.5 acre campus. This position requires regular janitorial and maintenance responsibilities but also an eye for the small cleaning and upkeep tasks that keep our property clean, functioning well and safely accessible for visitors and staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain outdoor spaces including wooded and landscaped areas and gardens with seasonal cleanup, gardening, painting, and yardwork.
- Maintain the Museum’s indoor facilities (the main Museum building and a separate Administration Building and Community Building meeting/party room) by actively collecting and clearing trash and debris, managing collection from our compost receptacles, and replenishing bathroom and cleaning supplies.
- Assist in maintenance and upkeep of indoor spaces including exhibit galleries, staff workspaces and offices, building systems, and storage and maintenance spaces
- Distributing deliveries and supplies across the campus (heavy lifting)
- Other duties as assigned in support of the Museum’s facilities needs and the objectives of the Facilities Department.
- Provide support for Museum exhibits and supplies on the exhibit floor, event and meeting set-up and take-down, and other tasks as needed
- Assist with exhibit fabrication and repair
- Ensure proper upkeep of equipment and tools, as well keeping the museum maintenance facility clean and organized
- Be on-call for routine facilities needs
- Assist in directing visitors and vehicles during peak visitation periods and coordinating arriving and departing groups
Qualifications and Requirement
- Ability to both follow directions and work independently to identify and resolve routine facility needs
- Sufficient proficiency in spoken and written English to understand and accomplish the regular tasks of this role
- Experience with outdoor maintenance is a plus
- Familiarity with power tools is a plus
- Extra hours supporting evening events and other special projects may be available on an irregular basis
- A valid driver’s license
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- This role includes significant outdoor work with exposure to extreme temperatures and inclement weather conditions; noise levels may be loud at times
- Must be able to lift, push, and pull 50 pounds, stand for prolonged periods of time, and be comfortable stooping, kneeling and crouching, and ascending and descending steps and ladders
- Must be able to comfortably move through both indoor and outdoor spaces on the museum’s campus
- This position requires good manual dexterity and stamina
- A positive, ‘can-do’, attitude toward the variety of tasks at hand.
